Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reserved special praise for Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood following Tuesday night’s comfortable 3-0 Premier League win over Brighton.

18-year-old Greenwood opened the scoring at the Amex Stadium as United showed real quality in the follow up to last week’s similar 3-0 win against Sheffield United.

Greenwood later turned provider for Fernandes for a stunning breakaway goal, while the Portuguese had also earlier netted after striking a Paul Pogba layoff goalward.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer labelled United, “Fantastic from the word go,” specifically praising his team’s intensity and willingness to press from the front.

“He played fantastically,” said of Greenwood’s contribution – via ManUtd.com.

“He’s a special kid and we know that when he gets his face up and looks forward that he’s dangerous, but his hold-up play, general play and link-up play was great. I’d have been proud of that goal,” the Norwegian added.

“He has a knack of that, he can go inside and outside, and he’s just as good with his right foot as he is with his left. He’s developing into a fine player and he’s a special finisher, a special kid in and around the box and he’s one of the better ones I’ve seen to be fair.”

As for Fernandes, who has lifted the whole club since his January arrival, Solskjaer is delighted with how he is emerging as a leader despite being at the club less than six months.

“I knew there was a leader there, a winner and we knew we needed that type of player. Fair play and well done to the club for making the deal happen,” the boss said.

“It was hard because of course [Sporting CP] don’t want to sell your best player and he’s come in and been fantastic. His second goal was good defending on a set-play and we know we’ve got pace and we wanted to counter quickly. It was a great pass by Nemanja [Matic], a great cross from Mason and fantastically finished by Bruno so I’m very, very happy with all the goals.”

United rose to within two points of fourth place Chelsea as a result of the win, while Leicester are only a point further ahead in third. Both teams have a game in hand to be played on Wednesday.
