Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is close to agreeing a new deal at the club.

The former Porto manager has worked wonders at Molineux since his arrival in 2017 – taking Wolves from the second-tier to a top-four race in the Premier League.

The Mirror understands talks have been ongoing between club and manager over the lockdown period, with the finishing touches now being applied to a contract that will run until 2023.

The 46-year-old is into his final year on current deal and Wolves are eager to secure his services for the long-haul. Nuno had previously said that negotiations with the club could begin after lockdown over a potential new deal.

“When you have something so serious [as the peak of coronavirus] to take care of, you don’t think of anything else,” he said, as quoted by The Guardian. “During this pandemic, I think everybody worldwide was thinking about their own families. Now we are back we will have time to talk.”

He also implied that he was keen to stay in the Midlands: “We are still under contract. We are here and it’s good to be here.”

Nuno’s men, however, face an uphill battle if they are to secure a Champions League berth for next season following back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Sheffield United. They currently sit in seventh and seven points adrift of Leicester in fourth.

Nevertheless, Wolves will fancy their chances of a deep Europa League run when the competition returns next month. The Midlands-based outfit go into their second leg of their round of 16 tie with Olympiacos at 1-1, with either Roma or Sevilla waiting for the winners in the quarter-finals.

Wolves are back in action on Sunday as they host Everton and although their Champions League dream is starting to fade, there’s no doubting the Molineux faithful will be buoyed by the news of Nuno’s potential extension.
