Sweden can ‘go very far’ in the World Cup, says former goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli

Sweden have the potential to go deep into the 2018 World Cup, according to former goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli.

This is Sweden’s first World Cup appearance since 2006, and beat South Korea 1-0 in their first outing in this year’s tournament.

They qualified through the play-off rounds for the World Cup, after finishing in second behind France, but ahead of Netherlands, in their qualifying group.

The Swedes went on to defeat Italy 1-0 on aggregate in their play-off encounter to advance to this summer’s competition in Russia, and Ravelli believes they have the ability to pull up a few trees.

“If we can make it to the second round, anything can happen. It will depend on the kind of teams we’re going to meet and play against and it will depend on our team’s shape,” he said.

“If we can play as we did against France and Italy in the qualifications, we can go very far.”

Next up for Sweden is Germany, who shockingly lost their opening game to Mexico.

Should the Swedes pull off another amazing victory, they will seal their place in the knockout stages.
