Chelsea v Southampton: Conte’s attack to lead Londoners to victory despite defensive frailties

Chelsea can chalk up a fifth consecutive Premier League home win at when they welcome struggling Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Antonio Conte’s charges shrugged off the disappointment of defeat against West Ham United last weekend with a convincing 3-1 win against Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium, and the defending champions will be confident of collecting all three points against Mauricio Pellegrino’s charges this weekend.

The Blues have won seven of their last nine matches in this competition and, having been beaten in just one of their last eight matches against the Saints, it is little surprise that Conte’s team are considered as 10/27 (1.37) favourites with SportPesa to win in west London.

Southampton suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester City at St Mary’s on Wednesday night and, in fact, Pellegrino’s team have won just one of their last eight matches in the Premier League.

The Saints are also without a win in their last five league matches on the road and are chalked up as a chunky 8/1 (9.0) chance to buck the trend here, while the same firm go 4/1 (5.0) that these two teams settle for a share of the spoils.

Southampton may feel that they are capable of testing Chelsea’s defence, though, for the team from Hampshire have found the net in all but one of their last 10 matches in all competitions, while the Blues have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last four fixtures; SportPesa offer 5/7 (1.71) that there are at least three goals scored in this game.

That particular selection would have landed in six of the last seven renewals between these teams at Stamford Bridge and the corresponding fixture between the teams last year produced no fewer than six goals, with Conte’s team claiming a fine 4-2 victory back in April.

Those expecting a glut of goals again may be tempted by SportPesa’s 9/5 (2.80) quote for at least four goals to be scored, but better value may lie in backing the Blues to come out on top in a game in which both sides find the target.

The 39/20 (2.95) quote would have seen punters profit from both of Chelsea’s last two Premier League wins and, with Southampton lacking in confidence but still showing some quality in the final third, backing the hosts to make it a hat-trick on Saturday could provide punters with a path to profit.
