London has been named as the host city for the UEFA European Championship final in 2020.

Euro 2020 will be the first edition of the competition to be held in 13 cities across Europe, instead of in one or two host countries.

London and Munich had both bid to stage the tournament showpiece and both semi-finals, and it is the English capital that has won the right to do so.

The three matches will be played at Wembley stadium, which has a capacity of 90,000 and has staged the Champions League final twice.

Munich will instead host one of the quarter-finals and three group matches, along with Azerbaijani capital Baku, Rome and Saint Petersburg.

A total of eight cities are to hold three group games and a last-16 clash each, with Bilbao’s new San Mames stadium serving as Spain’s representative.

The ceremony, held in Geneva, came on a historic day for Scotland, with the country having voted against independence, and Glasgow was awarded four games.

Former Euro 2000 hosts Netherlands and Belgium will also stage games in Amsterdam and Brussels, while Copenhagen, Dublin, Budapest and Bucharest were the other cities to win that right.

Cardiff and Stockholm were the most high-profile cities to miss out on holding games as their bids failed, as did the ambitious proposals from Minsk, Sofia, Skopje and Jerusalem.
