United can beat anyone on top form, Herrera warns

The Spaniard believes his side’s win at Everton underlined their capabilities perfectly, and served as the perfect response to their defeat against Arsenal

Manchester United can beat any opponent and aim for titles if they repeat the performance they produced against Everton on Saturday, Ander Herrera has claimed.

Louis van Gaal’s side bounced back from their 3-0 loss to Arsenal with a convincing victory at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Morgan Schneiderlin, Herrera and captain Wayne Rooney.

And Herrera, who was a commanding presence in the middle of the park, revealed United had been waiting to deliver the perfect response to their defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

“If we keep playing like this we can beat everybody. We showed everyone that Manchester United are here and that we are here to fight for everything,” the Basque midfielder told MUTV afterwards.

“When you lose the way that we did against Arsenal then we couldn’t wait for this game. I think the first 20 minutes today were fantastic and this was the way we had to react.

“When you have to fight for everything you have to play like we did.”

Having kept the gap with rivals Manchester City at the top of the table to two points, United now switch their focus to the Champions League ahead of a trip to Russia to face CSKA Moscow, and Herrera wants his side to prepare quickly for the encounter.

“We are very proud, we are very happy for this victory but we don’t have too much time to enjoy this,” added the 26-year-old. “We have to go to Russia in the week and the group is still very equal.”

United go into the match at the Arena Khimki on Wednesday needing a result, having secured only three points from their opening two group games.

Transfer Gossip: Cavani to replace van Persie at Manchester United

31 year old striker Robin van Persie has finalized his transfer to Fenerbahce after the three years he spent at Old Trafford. He left the Manchester club with no hard feelings – he even had a special day with his teammates and staff before leaving this Tuesday, he told the press. According to Talksport.com, his replacement might already be on the Red Devils’ radar: rumors say that it might be Uruguay player Edinson Cavani, currently playing at Paris Saint Germain. An interesting piece of news, considering that Manchester United only has about three weeks until the kickoff of their first Premier League fixture of the season against Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has previously said that his club won’t buy another striker “just for the sake of it”, but he will make a transfer if the opportunity arises. He considers himself a manager who prefers to develop players instead of buying, but he didn’t exclude the possibility of paying up if the “merchandise” offered is valuable enough. And, according to TalkSports.com transfer guru Warren Haughton, the transfer of Cavani might become part of a more complex deal, with Angel di Maria leaving Old Trafford for Paris Saint Germain, and Cavani transferring to the Red Devils. Other sources speak of a straight cash offer around £50 million for the player. It remains to be seen if Cavani will be worth a jackpot at www.allslotscasino.com.

Edinson Roberto Cavani Gómez is said to be a “quick, strong, opportunistic, and prolific forward” with a good technique, often described as a “modern striker”. He has scored some very impressive goals both with his feet and in the air, and he is capable of playing in several offensive positions, not only as a center-forward.

Cavani has made an impression during the 2007 the South American Youth Championship, which prompted several clubs – including Juventus and Milan – to be interested in him. He finally signed with Palermo, where he played until 2010, appearing in 109 matches and scoring 34 times. In 2010 he left for Napoli, where his goal count has grown significantly, finally signing a five year contract with Paris Saint-Germain. He started his career at the team on the right foot, so to say, with a goal scored in his first appearance in the team’s Champions League season opener. Until now he has appeared over 380 times on the field, and has a goal total of 210. He would certainly make a good addition to the Old Trafford team, helping it find its way toward another Premier League title. But this remains to be seen very soon.

BBC Renews Premier League Deal Until 2019

The BBC has renewed its deal to show Premier League highlights on Match of the Day for a further three years, until the end of the 2018-19 season. The agreement covers Match of the Day’s Sunday morning repeat, Match of the Day 2, Football Focus and a new midweek show on Wednesday nights on BBC Two and BBC Two HD.
Match of the Day, which is in its 50th year, and Match of the Day 2 have a combined weekly audience of nine million.

MOTD presenter Gary Lineker said he was “thrilled” with the news. Barbara Slater, the director BBC Sport, called the programme “the most iconic brand in television sport”. She added that it was “very exciting” to be able to add a new midweek show to the mix that would reflect “the continued appetite for Premier League action and analysis”. The BBC’s Premier League programmes will also be available on the iPlayer, the channel’s online video streaming service.Reacting to Thursday’s announcement, BBC director general Tony Hall said: “Sport matters. It brings the nation together. It can break hearts and raise spirits. And because it matters to the public, it also matters to the BBC. That’s why it’s fantastic news that we have kept the Premier League highlights.”

Match of the Day, or MOTD, is the BBC’s main football television show. The first MOTD edition was screened on BBC2 in 1964, showing highlights of the game between Arsenal and Liverpool at the Anfield stadium. The match was attended by over 40,000 spectators, while the television program was seen by only about 20,000. (On a personal note: this tells a lot about how our habits have changed in the last five decades).

The history of the show was not without issues. Several clubs have attempted to block it from being renewed as they feared that the TV show will cause a drop in live attendance to the events. The BBC has reached a compromise with these clubs – it has agreed not to reveal which game will be shown until the game itself has ended, an agreement that was kept until 1983.

Match of the Day had a rough time in the late 1980s, when the BBC lost its right for League football in front of ITV. The channel has only retained the rights for the FA Cup and England matches, so for a time Match of the Day was only shown on FA Cup days. It has regained the rights to show match highlights in 1992, when the Premier League was formed. Regular Match of the Day programming was resumed. Due to the competitive nature of the British TV industry there were changes in the ownership of the rights to showing matches, but BBC has managed to keep its rights to the Premier League, maintaining the MOTD until today – and apparently until the 2018-2019 season under the new deal.
