Toronto FC hire Bob Bradley as new head coach & sporting director

Bob Bradley has been appointed head coach and sporting director at Toronto FC, marking his immediate return to Major League Soccer after leaving LAFC earlier this month.

Toronto fired previous head coach Chris Armas in July, with Javier Perez completing the 2021 season as interim boss. The club also parted company with general manager Ali Curtis this week.

Bradley brings a host of coaching experience from all over the world to BMO Field. He first led Chicago Fire to the MLS Cup in 1998 and has been a three-time MLS coach of the year, most recently in 2019 when his LAFC team lifted the Supporters’ Shield.

He coached the United States national team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, has also led the Egypt national team, was the first American head coach in Premier League history and has managed at club level in both France and Norway. Canada is the sixth country of his career.

TFC president Bill Manning said, “We are excited for Bob to get to work. We are entering an extremely important offseason and know we have a team that needs a significant makeover.

“Bob has experience putting teams together and in getting them to perform at a high-level. He understands the expectations and standards of TFC and is ready to take on this challenge.”

Bradley himself added, “I want to thank Bill Manning and the board at MLSE for trusting me with this project. I have seen firsthand the passion that Toronto has for football and the way the club has connected with the city.

“I look forward to putting a team on the field that will make our fans and supporters proud.”

Toronto became the first non-American team to win the MLS Cup when they defeated Seattle Sounders in the 2017 final. But the club has been inconsistent since then, failing to make it to the post-season in 2018, but returning the MLS Cup final in 2019.

In 2021, Toronto finished 13th in the Eastern Conference and 26th overall after losing 18 matches.
