Barcelona Confirm Extent of Gerard Pique & Sergi Roberto Injuries

Barcelona have refused to put a timeline on Gerard Pique’s recovery following a serious injury against Atlético Madrid, but have confirmed that Sergi Roberto is facing two months on the sidelines.

A number of high-profile injuries have contributed to a stuttering start to the season for Barça, whose defeat on Saturday has left them sitting tenth in La Liga. Pique had to be helped off after an hour of that one, and looked visibly distressed with what has since been revealed as a knee injury.

Roberto, meanwhile, was able to finish the 90 minutes, but reports after the game suggested he could be facing a lengthy spell out with a muscle injury.

The club shed some light on both injuries on their official Twitter account on Sunday, revealing that Roberto is facing around two months out, while Pique’s situation is much more complicated.

“Tests performed this Sunday on Sergi Roberto have shown that he has a rupture in the femoral rectus of his right thigh. The approximate time he will be out is two months.

“Tests carried out this Sunday on Gerard Pique have shown that he has a grade 3 sprain in the internal lateral ligament and partial injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

“The evolution of the injury will condition his availability.”

Both Pique and Roberto had been fixtures of a struggling Barca team that has now won just one of their past six matches under Ronald Koeman. They are already nine points adrift of early pace-setters Real Sociedad, though a win in their game in hand would put them within three of Real Madrid, who have also struggled.
