Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson has been left delighted by the Red Devils’ form in recent weeks.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 17 games, and despite currently sitting fifth in the Premier League table, they are many people’s – and the bookies’ – favourites to end up finishing third as a result of their outstanding recent showings.

Ferguson has been absent from Old Trafford since the outbreak of the coronavirus as his near-fatal brain haemorrhage in 2018 has left him needing to shield himself at home, but a source close to the Scot told The Mirror he has been enthusiastically watching every minute.

“Alex has been enjoying the recent weeks of football’s return and the way United have emerged from lockdown,” the source said. “For someone still full of energy, he’s not at his best cooped up and is looking forward to returning to Old Trafford when it’s safe to do so.

“But he’s been delighted the way Solskjaer is managing the team and I believe they have spoken a couple of times in the last few weeks. He’s especially heartened by the emergence of the younger players like Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood.

“He managed United for an awful long time during good times and bad so he knows it’s not an easy job, particularly when things aren’t going well. That’s why he’s pleased at Solskjaer’s progress. He knows Ole is showing the grit and determination needed but also the bravery to make hard decisions.”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently admitted that he has taken inspiration from his time playing under Ferguson to get United back on track, implementing a high-tempo style of football with a young, dynamic side.

It’s something which Solskjaer has been trying to do ever since he returned to Old Trafford, but the January addition of Bruno Fernandes appears to have been the catalyst for a real upturn in form for the Red Devils.

The Portugal international’s creativity, coupled with impressive form of Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in attack, has turned United into one of England’s most impressive sides over the last few months.

Monday’s meeting with Southampton will give them a chance to climb into the top four, but with just three games to go and three points separating United, Chelsea and Leicester City, the race for the Champions League promises to be one of the most exciting storylines on offer.
