Poland and Napoli have been dealt a blow with the news that striker Arkadiusz Milik has been forced to withdraw from the international squad through injury.
Milik has been struggling with an abdominal muscle strain which kept him out of the squad for his side’s 0-0 draw with Genoa at the weekend.
The Napoli forward had been in devastating form when he has been able to feature, finding the back of the net five times so far but has been limited to just six league appearances so far this season.
According to Football Italia, Milik has now returned to Naples and will be assessed by the club doctors to determine the length of his absence from the squad.
Having already secured their place at Euro 2020, this isn’t necessarily the end of the world for Poland, and they may take this opportunity to test out other players ahead of next year’s tournament. Poland face Israel away and Slovenia at home this week in their final two games of Group G.
Napoli, on the other hand, will undoubtedly be worried about Milik’s situation, as he has been a shining light for the side recently. The forward has scored five goals in just six Serie A appearances this season, despite the Naples club struggling this season.
For now Napoli will have to rely on Dries Mertens in Milik’s absence for their meeting with Inter following the conclusion of the international break.
