Schalke scored six goals in this season’s group stages, the lowest tally amongst the 16 clubs left in the competition, with five of those six goals coming after half-time. However, only Borussia Dortmund (5) kept more clean sheets than Schalke (4).

Guardiola wrings the changes, having named a rotated team to face Newport in the FA Cup at the weekend. Only Ederson, Otamendi, David Silva and Fernandinho retain their places. Kompany is fit enough to make the bench, but John Stones and Gabriel Jesus are out injured. Leroy Sane has to settle for a spot among the substitutes against his former club.

Tedesco makes four changes to the Schalke side that drew with Freiburg. Bruma slots in on the right of the back three, which sees McKennie move into midfield. Caligiuri is brought in on the right flank with Bentaleb and Mendyl playing in the front three alongside Uth. Matondo, Harit and Kutucu drop to the bench and Omar Mascarrell is suspended.

SUBS: Riyad Mahrez, Danilo, Leroy Sane, Vincent Kompany, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Arijanet Muric, Phil Foden.

MANCHESTER CITY (3-2-4-1): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Aymeric Laporte; Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan; Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Raheem Sterling; Sergio Aguero.

SCHALKE (3-4-1-2): Ralf Fahrmann; Jeffrey Bruma, Salif Sane, Matija Nastastic; Daniel Caligiuri, Suat Serdar, Weston McKennie, Bastian Oczipka; Nabil Bentaleb; Mark Uth, Hamza Mendyl.

Schalke have been knocked out in the round of 16 in each of their last three Champions League appearances – 2010/11 was the last time they made it past that stage, reaching the semi-finals.

Manchester City have won 12 of their last 13 matches. The goals have been flying in of late, scoring 10 in their last two. Pep Guardiola’s side are still fighting for all four trophies and will fancy their chances of a convincing win this evening ahead of the League Cup final this Sunday.

Schalke are out of form at the moment, having only won four of their last 13 matches in all competitions. They sit 14th in the Bundesliga after a 0-0 home draw with Freiburg at the weekend. Domenico Tedesco’s side will be low on confidence and face a very tough task against an in-form Manchester City side.
