Betting: Will Man Utd regret signing Lukaku over Morata?

Having opted for the Everton striker over the Real Madrid man, Jose Mourinho will be hoping his loss doesn’t turn out to be the Blues’ gain next term

Seemingly Old Trafford bound earlier on in the summer, Alvaro Morata is now Chelsea’s record signing after Manchester United opted to bring in Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

While only time will tell which club has done the better business, the big Belgian is priced at 4/5 (1.80) with to outscore his Spanish counterpart in the Premier League next season, with the new Blues striker on offer at evens (2.00) to prove the more prolific.

However, more is expected of the two big money signings than a mere head-to-head battle, with both touted as strong Golden Boot contenders.

After scoring 25 goals for the Toffees last season, Lukaku is the 9/2 (5.50) second favourite behind only Harry Kane 10/3 (4.33) to finished top scorer next campaign, while Morata is available at a lengthier 10/1 (11.00) .

That seems fair considering the United striker’s superior track record in recent years, having scored 53 goals in 110 league games over the past five seasons, compared to 40 in 124 from the former Real Madrid man.

Nevertheless, the new Chelsea striker looks more than capable of enhancing his stats for Antonio Conte’s champions given he struck an impressive 15 goals in 26 La Liga matches last season – having started only 14 of those games.

With this in mind, odds of 10/11 (1.91) seem more than fair on the 24-year-old hitting at least 18 league goals in his debut season in England, certainly more so than the same price on him scoring under 17.5.

Those less impressed by the Spain international can get odds of 15/8 (2.88) on him failing to exceed last season’s 15-goal haul, or 2/1 (3.00) on his total lying between 16 and 19.

In reality, Conte would no doubt be satisfied if his new frontman can match the 20 goals scored by the wantaway Diego Costa en route to the title, with odds of 5/2 (3.50) available on him firing between 20 and 24.
